What efflorescence looks like

Efflorescence shows up as a white or grayish crystalline crust on the inside face of a poured-concrete, block, brick, or stone foundation. Sometimes it looks like a light dusting of powder; other times it builds into a fuzzy, feathery bloom or a hard, crusty ridge along a mortar joint or the base of a wall. Wipe it with a dry hand and it smears into a chalky film. It is most common along the bottom courses of block, around the cove joint where the wall meets the floor, near cracks, and under windows.

  • Chronic dampness feeds mold. The same water that leaves efflorescence keeps humidity high and wets drywall, insulation, and stored belongings. That is exactly the environment basement mold needs to grow, and mold is a genuine health concern.
