Your sump pump is the last line of defense against a flooded basement, and it almost always fails at the worst possible moment: during the heavy storm it was installed to handle.

A sump pump sits in a pit, called a basin, at the low point of your basement. When the water reaches a set level, a float switch turns the pump on, and it lifts the water up and out through a discharge pipe to a safe distance from the house. As long as it runs, your basement stays dry.

Debris in the basin

Silt, gravel, and sediment that collect in an unsealed pit can jam the impeller or clog the intake, choking the pump's ability to move water.

  • The pump runs constantly, or cycles on and off rapidly, even in dry weather
  • Strange grinding, rattling, or unusually loud motor noise when it runs

  • The basin holds standing water even when the pump should have emptied it
